Postpartum Essentials: A Guide to Healthy Recovery

Giving birth is an amazing experience, but it can also be exhausting. Your body has gone through a big change and needs time to recover. We want to help you navigate the first few weeks after giving birth, with some tips for a healthy recovery.

Rest and basic care

Your body has done an extraordinary amount of work, so rest is essential. Get as much sleep as you can, even if it’s in short bursts. Accept help from your partner, family or friends with household chores and baby care.

Watch your diet: eat foods rich in iron, protein and fibre to strengthen your immune system and fight anaemia. Hydration is also key: drink water often.

Hygiene and personal care

Maintain good personal hygiene, especially in the genital area. Shower with lukewarm water and mild soap, and use breathable pads. If you have had an episiotomy, follow your doctor’s recommendations to keep the wound clean and protected.

Don’t forget to take care of your skin. Moisturising is essential to avoid dryness and irritation. You can use specific postpartum creams.

Maternity and breastfeeding

If you decide to breastfeed your baby, breastfeeding can be a beautiful and beneficial experience for both you and your little one. However, it can also be challenging at first. Seek support from breastfeeding groups or consult a specialist in case of difficulties.

Enjoy skin-to-skin contact with your baby. It’s a great way to strengthen bonding and stimulate breast milk production.

Exercise and emotional well-being

Start exercising gradually. Walking, swimming or gentle yoga exercises are great places to start. Exercise will help you regain your energy, strengthen your body and improve your mood.

It is normal to feel tired, irritable or even depressed after childbirth. Don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor or a mental health professional if you experience persistent negative emotions.

Postpartum recovery is not only a physical process, it is also an emotional one. Your partner may also feel tired, overwhelmed and insecure in this new role. Talk to your partner, share your emotions and support each other.

Remember that you are not alone. Many women are going through what you are going through. Share your experiences, seek support and enjoy the journey to motherhood.

How long does postpartum recovery take?

Postpartum recovery can take several weeks or even months. Every woman is different and recovery time can vary depending on some factors, such as the type of delivery, general health and social support.

What exercises can I do after childbirth?

Ideally, start with low-impact exercise, such as walking or swimming. As you recover, you can incorporate higher-intensity exercises, such as yoga or Pilates. Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise routine.
